Asia is among the most biologically rich and also the highly populated area of the planet earth. Consequently, Asian countries are experiencing severe threats to their biodiversity rich areas and the ecosystems. This is accentuated by the fact that in Asia millions of people derive their livelihood from the wild and that there is an emerging conflict between development and conservation. Thus developing sustainable strategies, that effectively address both, the conservation of bio-rich areas and the livelihood needs of the people, is perhaps more important in Asian countries than elsewhere.
Developing such sustainable strategies of conservation and ...
During the first workshop of ABCDNet in Zhaoqing, participants discussed and made the missions as below:
a. Establish the Asia Biodiversity Conservation and Database Network (ABCDNet) a shared informatics infrastructure for conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in Asia.
b. Create mechanisms for an active participation of members, partners and stakeholders in developing and sustaining the data sharing network.
c. Promote joint efforts towards conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystem services in Asia.
To initiate the development of ABCDNet, a technical working group was established. The working group proposed governance structure, working structure and road map of the development of ABCDNet in future years. Now, the working group includes:

K N Ganeshaiah, Co-chair, University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK Bangalore India
During the foundation meeting, ABCDNet plan schedule was discussed as below:
1. Developing an online platform for ABCDNet, Prepare a report document/established the rules (MoU, data sharing and Secretariat)

The people of Asia enjoy a sustainably managed biological resource base through improved knowledge sharing and informed decision making process.
ABCDNet is the Biodiversity Asia web, connecting all biodiversity databases in Asia countries. We are always keen to welcome new memberships, whether individuals, national organiza-tions or international organizations. With more memberships from different Asia countries, especially from the most biodiversity-rich areas, ABCDNet would become more complete and representative.
How to join us?
To become a member in ABCDNet, an official letter of intent to Working Group is needed, expressing intent to sign the Membership application form. The letter should state the organization is in agree with the mission in principal, outline the willingness to share biodiversity data and actively participate in the implementation of the ABCDNet program.
