FIN participates in “Month of the Ocean” PH celebration

May has been declared as the Month of the Ocean (MOO) in the Philippines through Presidential Proclamation No. 57 by then President Joseph Ejercito Estrada issued in 1999. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) were tasked to spearhead the observance of the MOO in collaboration with the different sectors of society through the conduct of activities that shall highlight the conservation, protection and sustainable management of Philippine coastal and ocean resources.

Hence, a meeting was convened by the Bureau to harmonize all activities proposed for the MOO celebration and identify potential areas of collaboration for this month-long event. The meeting, opened and chaired by BMB Director Dr. Theresa Mundita S. Lim and facilitated by the Coastal and Marine Division, was attended by around 20 agencies last 3 April 2017.

MOO 2017 focuses on connectivity of people and marine environment. Several activities and events are lined-up

to celebrate MOO among which include: Forum on Benham Rise and Biodiversity; National Biodiversity Congress; Oceans Festival; Marine Biodiversity Photo Competition; Mangrove Exposure events; Exhibit of Northern Palawan MPA Network; Technical Forum on Seaweeds; and Lecture Series (Marine Conversations) on various issue on marine environment. FIN is currently preparing  one-page info sheets on selected species containing relevant conservation and management options. These flyers will be distributed at the MOO events as part of the info dissemination campaign for the care of our ocean resources.
